The Violin Sonata in A minor, Op. 13 is a sonata for violin and piano by Ignacy Jan Paderewski, composed in 1882 (published 1886). It is a three-movement work dedicated to the violinist Pablo de Sarasate and was first published by Bote & Bock. 

Movements

  1. Allegro con fantasia

  2. Intermezzo — Andantino

  3. Finale — Allegro molto quasi presto. 

Composition and publication

Paderewski composed the sonata in the early 1880s; the work is commonly dated to 1882 with first publication in Berlin in 1886 by Bote & Bock. It is listed in standard Paderewski work-lists as Op. 13 (Violin Sonata in A minor). 

Reception and recordings

Though not among Paderewski’s most frequently discussed works, the sonata has received modern recordings and appears on recent releases (for example on recordings from the Frederick Chopin Institute and several commercial releases). Noted recordings/performances include releases listed on PrestoMusic and interpretive recordings discussed in reviews of Polish violin repertoire.
