Teresa Carreño’s Gottschalk Waltz, Op. 1 is a solo piano composition, written in the early 1860s as a tribute to Louis Moreau Gottschalk, the American virtuoso pianist and composer who was one of Carreño’s early mentors. Composed when Carreño was still in her teens, the work reflects Gottschalk’s influence through its rhythmic vitality, lyrical melodic lines, and brilliant pianistic writing. The piece is characteristic of the 19th-century salon style, featuring virtuosic passages, sweeping arpeggios, and a dance-like waltz rhythm. It demonstrates Carreño’s precocious talent as both a performer and composer, and her connection to the transatlantic Romantic musical tradition.
