Silhouettes, Op. 8 is a cycle for piano solo by Antonín Dvořák.

Origin

Antonín Dvořák composed these 12 Silhouettes in the autumn of 1879. Following the success of his work Slavonic Dances, he promised his publisher Fritz Simrock to publish his subsequent works primarily with him. However, he wanted to have this work published by the publisher Franz Hofmeister in Leipzig, which is why Dvořák gave this cycle of works a low opus number.

For nine of the twelve Silhouettes, the composer reworked his own themes from his first two symphonies and the song cycle "Cypresses"; for the remaining three pieces, he drew upon other works, presumably from 1865. For the first, fifth, eighth, eleventh, and twelfth Silhouette, he used themes from his first symphony; in the third and sixth Silhouette, Dvořák reworked material from his 2nd Symphony. In the middle section of the first Silhouette, he used his theme from the song "Im tiefen Walde stehe ich hier" (based on poems by Gustav Pfleger-Moravský) from his song cycle "Cypresses." Three years after its publication in 1880, Theodor Kirchner arranged this work for piano four hands.
