The Trio Sonata in D minor, H. 569 (Wq. 145) is a chamber music work composed by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Scored for flute, violin, and basso continuo, it is a notable example of the trio sonata form during the transition from the Baroque to the Classical era.

Background

Composed in 1731, the work is a revision of an earlier sonata for violin and continuo. It is included in a significant collection of trio sonatas written by C.P.E. Bach. For a period, this sonata was attributed to C.P.E. Bach's father, Johann Sebastian Bach, and appeared in some catalogs as BWV 1036. Subsequent historical research clarified its authorship as a work by the younger Bach.

Musical Structure

The sonata follows the traditional three-movement structure common to the trio sonata form of the period:

  1. Allegretto

  2. Largo

  3. Allegro

The work reflects the stylistic characteristics of C.P.E. Bach’s early chamber music, blending the polyphonic rigor inherited from the late Baroque tradition with the expressive, sensitive sensibilities that would characterize his later Empfindsamer Stil.

Instrumentation

The standard instrumentation for the work consists of:

  • Flute

  • Violin

  • Basso Continuo (typically realized by a harpsichord or other keyboard instrument, often supported by a cello or bassoon on the bass line).

Catalogue Information

  • H. number: H. 569 (Helm catalog)

  • Wq. number: Wq. 145 (Wotquenne catalog)
