Antonín Dvořák's Poetic Tone Pictures, Op. 85, is a cycle for solo piano and is considered his longest work in this genre.

Background

This work was composed between April 16 and June 6, 1889, partly in Prague and partly at his summer residence, Vysoká, near Příbram. At that time, the composer was in a nostalgic phase, feeling a strong connection to his homeland. He sent the score to his publisher, Fritz Simrock, who published it in three volumes later that year. At that time, Dvořák only named the individual pieces, not the cycle itself. The composer titled the individual pieces as follows:

  1. Night Journey (Noční cestou) (Allegro moderato/B minor)

  2. Joking (Žertem) (Allegretto leggiero/G major)

  3. In the Old Castle (Na starém hradě) (Lento/E flat major)

  4. Spring Song (Jarní) (Poco allegro/A major)

  5. Peasant Ballad (Selská balada) (Allegro giusto/B flat minor)

  6. Reminiscence(Vzpomíní) (Andante/B major)

  7. Furiant (Allegro feroce/A flat minor)

  8. Dance of the Goblins (Rej skřítků) (Allegretto/A flat major)

  9. Serenade (Serenáda) (Moderato e molto cantabile/C major)

  10. Bacchanalia (Bacchanal) (Vivacissimo/C minor)

  11. Gossip (Na táčkách) (Andante con moto/F major)

  12. At a Tumulus (U mohyly) (Grave. Tempo di marcia /F minor)

  13. On the Holy Mountain (Na Svaté hoře) (Poco lento/D-flat major)
